Go Nuclear Tonight

Seriously, when's the last time you were at a RAWK show? Things get pretty old-school tonight; it'll feel like Detroit circa 2001 all over again. In a good way. Maybe the bar can start carrying Stroh's.

This Weekend: Hologram, Karl Blau + More.

Jeez, what the heck? For the relatively small number of shows that happen in LIC-QNS-NYC, seems like we make it up in quality. There are two uber-top-notch lineups at the Creek and the Cave this weekend, anchored by NYC buzz-band Hologram and K Records' Karl Blau. Still at the low-low price of five clams. You don't need to go to any other boroughs this weekend for anything, or even to Astoria, for that matter.

DENNIS DRISCOLL (Seattle, WA)

Normal Show Tonight, Abnormal Show Tomorrow

We've got a diverse bill of pop, rock, and folk acts tonight and it'll be great. But really, check out this thing at the Creek and the Cave on Saturday. It's called CrazyTownFest. I think that's an inside joke, but what I do know is that this is pretty insane. There are going to be 24 bands playing over the course of 16 hours, including neighorhood faves like Aldenbarton, The Nuclears, The Gulf of Michigan, and Queens Denim Rockers. On top of that, they'll be providing a new snackable food every hour, on top of hourly drink specials, raffles, and DJs. Look at this website for the full schedule, and prepare to be overwhelmed.

The important part: this event is a fundraiser for the very, very expensive soundproofing that the theater room will be undergoing. If you've been going to shows at the Creek and the Cave over the past several months, you'll notice that the owners have been investing a lot in the space. There are new lights, new mics, stands, direct boxes, and monitors. There's even a drum and bass-amp backline now to make changeover between bands a lot easier (and allow them to travel more lightly). The next step: soundproofing, which will allow shows to actually continue past midnight, and heck, maybe even weeknight shows. The joint has always been a great space; it's now becoming a real rock club. Other than Ridgewood's Silent Barn, this is the only real indie-rock venue in Queens, a borough of 2.5 million people, which would be the fourth-largest city in the U.S. if it were independent. Think about that. Let's make this happen.

This Weekend: Fall Back, Stumble Home

There's good shows going on both tonight and tomorrow in Long Island City, Queens (where Greenpoint and Midtown come together, make-out, and have babies that are a combination of upscale glass towers and aromatic ethnic industrial zones! Oh, and some comment about hipsters and yuppies.)

Tonight, check out some rock, pop, and 'tronic music at the Creek and the Cave, and also revel in its shiny new stage lighting, mics, and monitors. Famed bartender Zoe will be downstairs serving you beer-and-shot specials ($5?) and spinning (read: i-Pod-ing) your favorite indie-rock hits as always.

Tomorrow at Dominie's Hoek is a special patent-pending "Theme Night" (and no, that theme isn't "Michiganians" for once). Duck your head into the tavern, where four different acts will be helping you "Fall Back" in time via assorted genres of old-time music. Get it? "Fall Back"? Wink. Nudge.
